This is a design that would hold up just as well today, particularly in this execution which used smaller registers and applied steel hour markers with lume at the tips. While 1969 brought a plethora of new models to the Heuer chronograph range, Valjoux equipped manually winding Autavia chronograph references remained in the catalog. Such is the case with the reference 7763, which was first introduced in 1968, and saw a revision in 1970 with a revised bezel, and red accents added to the dial. The 7763 offers a classic two-register dial layout with a running seconds indication at 9 o’clock, and a 30-minute totalizer at three o’clock. The remainder of the dial is quite simple, with the branding at the top, and a small ‘Swiss’ marking at the bottom, with a ‘T’ overhead denoting the presence of tritium on the dial—the latter the kind of detail vintage collectors go nuts over.
The 7763C is among the most handsome of the Autavia collection for its simplicity, and that extends to the movement, which is a hand winding Valjoux 7730. The Heuer reference 1563 was introduced in 1972 as an attempt to reach new customers at a better price point than their new automatic chronograph references. These Swiss made replica watches used an automatic caliber 15 which removed the 12-hour totalizer, retaining the running seconds indication, which had been moved to the 10 o’clock position, and a more prominent 30-minute totalizer at 3 o’clock. The resulting design is quite unique, and while the movement made some compromises in order to reach a wider audience, this is still an important design in the evolution of Heuer chronographs. The asymmetric design was also seen on their Skipper references, and the focus on 30 minute timing was easy to understand.
This Autavia reference 1563 uses a base black dial with black bezel insert that is indexed to both the hours and minutes. Orange accents around the 30 minute timing sub-dial have faded to a pleasant desaturated tone, which is matched by the hands and hour markers. The thick, radially brushed case retains much of its original lines and detail, with minimal signs of wear. This is a more accessible reference available from Chrono24, but is one of the most compelling designs of the range, if you ask us.
